Police correct name of woman who died in McAllen shooting
The McAllen Police Department provided an update Tuesday on the 42-year-old woman who died during a shooting Friday night.
The woman who died Friday night is Santos Verenice Garcia, 42, of McAllen, said Lt. Joel Morales, a spokesman for the department. Officers initially identified her as Berenice Garcia.
At 11:53 p.m., the McAllen Police Department dispatched officers to the 900 block of North Third Street to investigate a domestic disturbance.
Officers met with a 42-year-old mother and her daughter, according to a news release from the police department. Two other daughters and 4-year-old twins were also home when officers arrived.
(Court records from a paternity case list the mother's name as "Santos Verenice Garcia." In the news release, police identify her as "Berenice Garcia." It wasn't immediately clear what accounted for the discrepancy.)
The mother and daughter said 30-year-old Cruz Pinon - the girl's stepfather - wanted access to the daughter's phone, according to the news release. When the daughter refused to allow Pinon access to her phone, they started arguing.
"In the course of this Call-For-Service, the teenage daughter made an outcry to responding officers of ongoing assaults on her by Pinon," according to the news release. "With such outcry, responding officers proceeded to interview the teenage daughter outside of the home."
During the interview, Pinon emerged from the home and started shooting.
Pinon killed his wife, 42-year-old Santos Verenice Garcia; and his stepdaughter, 16-year-old Ashley Segura Garcia.
Pinon also wounded his 13-year-old stepdaughter before killing himself.
