Sheriff's Office: Murder suspect dead after shootout in Mexico

A man accused of murder died last week after a shootout with the Mexican military, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office.

Isai Varela, 27, of Alamo fled to Rio Bravo — where he was born — after shooting 26-year-old Felishia Solis and 30-year-old Jose Alfredo Zuniga on Feb. 9, 2017, according to the news release.

Investigators worked with Mexican law enforcment, attempting to track Varela down.

According to the news release:

On Tuesday October 3, 2017, Sheriff’s Investigators learned that Isai Varela was involved in a shoot-out with the Mexican military and was killed in the process. Investigators have confirmed the identity through the fingerprints that were recovered with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Mexican authorities that the deceased person is Isai Varela. The families of Felishia Solis and Jose Alfredo Zuniga have been notified.
