Brownsville man accused of trying to take baby from mother

Eleazar Benavides is charged with injury to a child after trying to take a 4-month-old baby from his mother.

An elderly man remains behind bars after he allegedly attacked a woman outside a Brownsville grocery store and demanded that she give him her 4-month-old baby.

It all happened outside HEB grocery store off Central and Boca Chica Boulevards on Saturday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that 63-year-old Eleazar Benavides approached a woman pushing a stroller in the parking lot of the store.

Benavides allegedly tried to get a hold of the woman TMs 4-month-old baby.

The woman told police that Benavides demanded the baby and even tried taking him by force.

Police said the woman fought off Benavides and ran inside the store to call 911.

Officers arrived at the scene and charged Benavides with injury to a child for placing the baby in danger.

Benavides remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail under a $20,000 dollar bond.
