Medical assistant rises above cancer scare and inspires others with positivity

A medical assistant in Edinburg isn't letting a mammogram scare, where two lumps have been recently detected on her breast, stand in the way of her positive nature at work.
Co-workers say Sandra Gutierrez is a spiritual and kind person who goes above and beyond for her patients at the Edinburg Medical Center on South 10th Avenue.
But they fear Sandra's constant smile may really be masking her true pain.
They turned to FNB Insurance Agency and Action 4 News to help Pay it 4Ward.
The surprise for Sandra unfolds inside Dr. Ben Garza's office.
"Somebody shared an amazing story about you," Action 4's Ryan Wolf said. "It was so touching that we wanted to come here and share just how much you mean to somebody here. Can we do that?"
Sandra immediately started to tear up as the whole staff gathered around in support.
Keli Roel nominated her on valleycentral.com under the Pay it 4Ward link online.
"Sandra you're a very positive, kind person," she told her. "We all look up to you and respect you. We wish to follow in your footstep to overcome any type of issues that may come into our lives. And this is just a small token to show you how much we love and appreciate you. On behalf of FNB Insurance and Action 4 News, I'd like to Pay it 4Ward."
Keli awards her friend and colleague $400 in cash.
"It's to help you out with anything for any medical or necessity that you may need," she said.
The money won't be used for personal pleasure, Sandra says it's for her health.
"My biggest worry was not being able to do my biopsy... my breast biopsy," she said while crying. "That was my biggest concern. The results are not a concern to me because I'm prepared because the Lord has prepared me. Whether it's good or bad, I have declared that it's going to be good in Jesus name."
The office staff sees Sandra as a source of inspiration.
They say she's a beacon of positivity that shines through every day at work.
Sandra's humbled by the kindness shown to her.
"I thank all the staff," she said. "I was really not aware of what was going on here. You got me by surprise. All I can say is thank you so much and may the Lord multiply to whoever provided."
Bill Jones with FNB Insurance Agency provides the cash for kindness as a Pay it 4Ward partner.
"Sandra, it's an honor to meet you," Bill said. "I'm humbled by your positive outlook and your rosy personality. It's a real honor."
Sandra may not be able to fight back the tears but she vows to fight whatever may stand in the way of her health.
"Pay it 4Ward," she said.
