Democrats across the state are hoping to capitalize on the announcement that Governor Perry will not be running for re-election.
Here in the valley, the Chair of the Texas Democratic Party said this is a perfect window of opportunity.
Gilberto Hinojosa, chair of the Texas Democratic Party, said he was thrilled to hear Perry will not be seeking a 4th term.
Hinojosa said this is an opportunity for Democrats and the state of Texas to try to turn things around, and he said the time for change is now.
"Texas, I think, ranks next to last in funding for public education. We rank next to number one in the total number of children and adults that are uninsured in Texas. I mean, these are things you can TMt be happy about," Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said.
He said these are reasons why he is glad to see Perry bow out of the upcoming gubernatorial race.
"He's been the governor for over 12 years, and I think it TMs safe to say he's made a mess of things...leadership has been sorely lacking at the top levels of Texas state government. I think Texas Democrats can offer leadership there," he explained.
Hinojosa told Action 4 News, Texas has a very low voter turnout, but he said the right candidate can make all the difference.
It is why he hopes Senator Wendy Davis decides to run for higher office.
"The candidate creates the passion for people to go out and work for the campaign and the desire to get out there and participate in the political process which is the most important thing we have to offer in a democracy," he said.
Hinojosa said he believes the majority of Texans can relate to Senator Davis, which he said makes her a winning candidate.
"People who come from a difficult background and pull themselves up by a bootstrap, and don TMt just go out there and make money for themselves. They decide that they're going to give back to the community what they go and try to make their community better and that TMs what Wendy Davis is all about," Hinojosa said.
Hinojosa said there are other possible candidates, but at this point he said Senator Davis is the front runner for the Democratic Party that is if she does decides to run for governor.
