Judge candidate facing DWI charges

      Jesus Contreras mugshot

A candidate for a state district judge seat that oversees juvenile cases in Hidalgo County found himself on the other side of the law Sunday night.

South Padre Island police arrested Jesus "Jesse" Contreras under DWI charges.

Town officials told Action 4 News that police were called to the Corral Reef bar on the north end of the Island for a Sunday night disturbance.

Witnesses told police that the suspect left the bar in his car.

Police stopped Contreras while driving the car near the Denny's restaurant on the 1200 block of Padre Boulevard.

Officers arrested Contreras for driving while intoxicated and charged his 21-year-old passenger Vanessa Galvan with public intoxication. Police did not elaborate on their relationship.

State records show that Contreras is the presiding municipal judge for the City of Mercedes.

Contreras is also a judicial candidate for the 449th State District Court.

The court was recently created and mostly oversees juvenile cases.

Contreras defeated Maxine Longoria-Nash in the March Democrat Party primaries.

He faces incumbent Republican candidate Danny Rios in the Nov. 4 general election.

Rios was appointed to the position by Texas Gov. Rick Perry shortly after state officials created the new court.
