White had nearly 76 percent of the vote with a handful of precincts reporting to defeat wealthy Houston hair care magnate Farouk Shami and five other lesser known candidates today.
White is also a well funded businessman who made a name for himself during his city's response to the Hurricane Katrina evacuation..
White will face incumbent Governor Rick Perry who has taken 53 percent of the vote in the Republican Party Primary as of 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison garnered 31 percent of the vote and conceded just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
She told her supporters to back Perry in November.
