The City of Harlingen has an interim police chief.
City leaders met and approved to make Harlingen Police Capt. Michael Kester as interim police chief.
But the decision was not made without controversy.
After about 25 years on the force, Harlingen Police Chief Danny Castillo is retiring in mid-February but claims he was forced to resign for political reasons.
Critics said they want more effective leadership for the police department and that Castillo could have stayed with the rank of lieutenant but chose to resign.
Both supporters and critics of Castillo attended and spoke at the meeting.
Kester is expected to take over after Castillo leaves in mid-February.
