A student body president close to graduating from a South Texas university is facing deportation for entering the U.S. illegally when he was a teenager.
Jose Arturo Guerra, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Texas at Brownsville, had an immigration hearing scheduled Wednesday.
Guerra's attorney, Jaime Diez, tells the San Antonio Express-News that his client came to the U.S. in 2003 on a visitor visa that expired two years later.
The attorney says Guerra's father wouldn't help renew the visa after the son went home for a visit.
The attorney says Guerra decided to enter the country illegally when he was 15.
Guerra was discovered in December when the management and international business major tried to legalize his status through his mother's marriage to a U.S. citizen.
