Valley medical school bill passes in Texas Senate

A medical school for the Rio Grande Valley is one step closer to being a reality.

Texas State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) filed a bill to set up the University of Texas Health Science Center South Texas.

The bill Was passed by the Texas Senate on Wednesday.

The bill is now in the Texas House of Represenatatives where it will likely be picked up by Lucio's son, Texas State Rep. Eddie Lucio III (D-San Benito).

Senator Lucio told the Rio Grande Guardian that medical school would grow out of the RAHC in Harlingen with possible satellite campuses in surrounding counties.

"There have been studies done which indicate that the Valley is the next stop for a full-fledged medical school," Senator Lucio said. "Everything is in place."
