WAC Suspends UTPA Coach for Saturday's Home Game

Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Jeff Hurd Friday announced that University of Texas-Pan American head men TMs basketball coach Dan Hipsher has been suspended for the school TMs next regular season game.

The suspension is a result of violations of the Conference TMs Sportsmanship Policy in UTPA TMs game against Utah Valley University on Jan. 30.

In the first half of that game, Hipsher was ejected after arguing a non-call with a referee. According to spectators, Hipsher had to be restrained, and bumped the referee on his exit from the court.

Conference sportsmanship policies are clearly defined, said Hurd. The action taken is intended to send a very clear message that there are definite lines that cannot be crossed, and that violations of the policies are not acceptable under any circumstance.

The suspension is effective for UTPA TMs game against Bakersfield on Feb. 1.

We accept the ruling of the Western Athletic Conference, and as a result, Dan will not coach his team Saturday, UTPA Director of Athletics Chris King said. We all look forward to putting the incident behind us. Our focus now is on Saturday night against Bakersfield and the remainder of the conference season. Dan continues to have my full support moving forward.
