Harlingen South coach arrested for DWI

Harlingen South High School Head Football Coach Gilberto Leal is facing criminal charges following an arrest for DWI.

Harlingen police confirmed Leal's arrest early Thursday morning.

Records show that Leal was booked into the Harlingen City Jail under a Class B misdemeanor DWI charge.

Court records show that Leal was pulled over for speeding on Morgan Boulevard just south of Grimes Avenue after midnight early Thursday morning.

The officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol and that bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

When asked if he had been drinking, Leal told the officer, "No."

Leal told the officer he had been coming from his girlfriend's house two blocks away.

The records show that Leal refused a breathalyzer test.

Leal appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Thursday morning where he was issued a $550 dollar bond.

Harlingen CISD officials told Action 4 News that they are aware of the incident but could not further comment since it is considered as a personnel issue.

However, school districts officials said HCISD does hold employees to high standards and will address the issue accordingly.

Officials declined to comment if Leal will appear at Friday evening's football game against the PSJA Bear at Harlingen's Boggus Stadium
