Trailing 38-32 at halftime, the Broncs (0-3) pulled within 47-43 with on a jumper by Brandon Provost with 15:12 remaining, but Ricardo Glenn scored four points while Torrey Craig, Ty Greene and Jodd Maxey added two each as the Spartans (2-1) went on a 10-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 57-43 lead.
Ruben Cabrera ended the run with a three-pointer and Provost knocked one down from long range before hitting the first of two free throws. He missed the second, but Jared Maree put it back. Provost went back to the line seconds later and hit both shots to bring the Broncs within 57-54 at the 7:13 mark.
After a three-point play put the Spartans up 60-54, Maree hit two baskets for five points to bring the Broncs within 60-59. Forty seconds later, Provost hit a pair of free throws to give the Broncs the lead at 61-60.
Greene hit a pair of free throws and Craig followed with a bucket to give the Spartans a 64-61 lead, but Nick Weiermiller nailed a jumper from behind the arc to tie the game with 3:34 remaining.
The game was tied at 66-66 with under one minute remaining when Craig hit a bank shot to give the Spartans the lead. Then, with 8.6 seconds left, Mario Blessing hit a pair of free throws to complete the scoring.
Maree led the Broncs with a game-high 17 points while Provost scored 13, Cabrera had 11 and Weiermiller had 10.
Glenn and Craig tied for the Spartans TM team-lead in scoring with 15 points each with Maxey finished with 13.
The Broncs were within 14-12 in the first half after a Cabrera lay-up, but the Spartans went on an 8-2 run until Weiermiller hit a three-pointer with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Spartans scored the next five points to take a 27-17 lead. The Broncs chipped away at the lead in the closing minutes of the half to pull within six.
The Broncs host the Texas State Bobcats, who beat the Toledo Rockets 94-91 in the first game on Friday, in their second game of the UTPA Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
