(CBS 4 SPORTS) - The Houston Dynamo named their new head of their USL affiliate in the Rio Grande Valley by naming former Seton Hall men's soccer coach Gerson Echeverry as head coach of the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros.

Echeverry has been the head coach of the Pirates soccer program for the last five years and prior to that was an assistant coach for the US Soccer Federation U-17 team under Dynamo head coach Wilmer Cabrera.

“We are very pleased to welcome to the Houston Dynamo technical staff as the head coach of the RGV FC Toros,” Dynamo Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience at all levels of soccer in North America, which made him an ideal candidate. His head coaching experience, work ethic and proven track record of guiding some of the top young talent in the U.S. to the professional ranks will be a big asset for our club moving forward.”

Echeverry was selected by the Dynamo technical staff, led by Jordan, Cabrera and Assistant General Manager Nick Kowba.

“I’m proud to become a part of the Houston Dynamo organization, excited for the opportunity to coach the RGV FC Toros and am looking forward to becoming a part of the Valley community,” Echeverry said in a statement released by the Dynamo. “The opportunity to develop a team in the USL and to help develop young professionals and hopefully help them move on to the first team in Houston is something I’m very excited about. I look forward to working with Matt, Wilmer and Nick to make sure that this is something that everyone can benefit from, both by developing players to play for the first team and by getting results on the field in USL.”

Echeverry is a former MLS player spending time with the former NY/NJ MetroStars and D.C. United. He also played for Cortuluá in Colombia’s Categoria Primera A (first division).

RGV FC finished the 2017 season with a 9-15-8 record in the USL Western Conference.
