For the 2nd consecutive week, Harlingen South athletic coordinator and head football coach Gilbert Leal will not be in the stadium as the Hawks varsity football team takes the field.
Leal was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Harlingen on the night of Wednesday, October 5th, then released on bond at 2pm the following day. Harlingen CISD released a statement on Friday October 7th that stated Defensive Coordinator Jim Morton would assume Leal's head coaching duties for that night's home game against PSJA, a game Harlingen South won, 31-17.
The school district today confirmed that Leal will not be at PSJA Stadium in Pharr for Thursday's Hawks game with PSJA North.
UPDATE: Harlingen CISD released this statement from Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores Thursday afternoon:
"HCISD continues to conduct a thorough review of the incident involving Harlingen High School South coach Gilbert Leal. Coach Jim Morton will continue with the responsibilities associated with tonight's football game."
