Longtime Bears Assistant Takes Over PSJA Southwest

The new high school within PSJA ISD has a name: PSJA Southwest; a mascot: the Javelinas; a color scheme: navy, silver and white. And as of Monday's school board meeting, PSJA Southwest has a new head football coach and athletic coordinator, Jesus Reyes.

If the name souns familiar to football fans in the tri-cities, that's because Reyes has had a hand in coaching an entire generation of PSJA Bears, serving as an assistant since joining Gil Garza's staff in 1988. Reyes became offensive coordinator when Roy Guzman took over the Bears 12 years ago, a position he's held ever since.

8 seasons as OC under current PSJA head coach Mel Rios is only the tip of the iceberg, however, as the two longtime friends have coached together for 30 years. "I couldn't be prouder of Coach Reyes, but I'm not sure what I'll do without him," Rios said.

Reyes, a devotee of the wing-t offense, is expected to bring that scheme to the PSJA Southwest Javelinas, who will not begin varsity play until 2012.
