Tigers ignoring doubters en route to state 7-on-7 tournament
(CBS 4 Sports) - For the third straight year, the Mercedes Tigers are headed to the Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament, but this year carries a lot more weight for the squad. "Ever since these seniors left, they thought we weren't gonna be as good but we're gonna show them what we can do," said Tigers wide receiver Leroy Garcia.
The 2018 Tigers only returned 3 players, with most of the team graduating, which left the Tigers being overlooked by opponents. "To this day people are still doubting us. They didn't think we were going to state but now we're going we just have to show them what we can do," said Garcia.
"If they're not with us or they're with us, you know, we know who's with us and who's not but if they're not, then that's fine," said Tigers quarterback Israel Alegria.
The outside talking has only fueled the young and rising Tigers as they claw their way to College Station following their nail-biting win in the Rio Grande Valley State Qualifier over rival Edcouch-Elsa. "A lot of people talk but that's just outside. When I get on the field, it's just my play, not anybody else s. It's just talk,' said Alegria.
"People are gonna keep doubting you throughout your life and you just need to prove them wrong and that's exactly what we're doing," said Garcia.
