UTRGV to Host Texas Women; Oklahoma Men in Hoops in 2018
(CBS 4 Sports) A pair of Big 12 programs will be travelling to Edinburg for the first time to play college basketball games against the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
The University of Texas women's basketball team unveiled their non-conference schedule on Thursday and announced that they will face UTRGV at the Fieldhouse in Edinburg on Thursday, December 20th. It will be the first ever trip to the Valley for the Longhorn women. New UTRGV women's basketball coach Lane Lord, at his introductory press conference on Wednesday said that UTRGV will travel to TCU and Baylor during the non-conference schedule as well.
UTRGV athletic director Chris King indicated that this UT match-up came together due to former women's coach Larry Tidwell's relationship with Texas head coach Karen Aston. King said he is hoping that this won't be the last appearance by a Longhorn program in Edinburg and hopes they can get future baseball games played in Edinburg down the road.
As previously reported by CBS 4 the UTRGV men's basketball team will host the Oklahoma Sooners at the new Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg. the future home of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G-League.
UTRGV was originally scheduled to host OU at the start of this past season, however the game was postponed due to the delays in the arena's construction.
Current UTRGV head coach Lew Hill is a former assistant coach of OU head coach Lon Kruger. Kruger's first head coaching job was in Edinburg at what was then Pan American University and spent four years as the Broncs' head coach. Kruger coached teams have reached the NCAA tournament 18 times in his career with Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV, and Oklahoma.
