The Turkey-Quitaque Independent School District has placed Valley High School boy's basketball assistant coach Barry Johnson on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a female student.
According to Turkey-Quitaque Superintendent Jackie Jenkins, the Board of Trustees has taken action to terminate Johnson's contract at the end of its term.
The District received a report of an employee that may have solicited an inappropriate relationship with a female student on Feb. 16. Turkey-Quitaque ISD reported the allegations to the Briscoe County Sheriff's Office and Child Protective Services and immediately began coordinating its own investigation with authorities.
Johnson was placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation on Feb. 19.
In Jenkins official statement to the media, she says, "The District’s policies concerning improper personal relationships between staff and students are strictly enforced, and District employees receive regular training on the prohibitions against soliciting and/or engaging in improper relationships with students. The District’s Administration will continue to cooperate with state and local law enforcement and licensing agencies as needed, to the fullest extent permitted by law. The Briscoe County Sheriff’s Office will determine whether to pursue criminal charges in this matter. The District’s Administration encourages anyone with information of a suspected improper relationship or the solicitation of such an improper relationship to immediately contact the office of the Superintendent or the Briscoe County Sheriff’s Office."
Due to state and federal law, personally identifiable information about the student cannot be released.
