Vipers Eliminated By Spurs in Second Round
Austin, Texas, April 2, 2018 – The NBA G League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers, proud affiliate of the Houston Rockets, were knocked out of the NBA G League Playoffs after suffering a 91-117 loss to the Austin Spurs.
RJ Hunter and Monte Morris led the RGV Vipers in scoring with 20 points. Derrick White, Austin Spurs’ leading scorer, had 20 points in the game as well.
The first quarter was hard fought with five lead changes. RJ Hunter helped set the tempo for the RGV Vipers, scoring eight of the team's points. The Austin Spurs were able to finish strong with a 7-0 run.
The Vipers entered the second quarter trailing 25-29. Austin Spurs started to distance themselves from the Vipers in the second quarter. Spurs’ Max Costello scored 10 points as Austin extended their lead to 20 points.
The Vipers were not able to recuperate from the deficit in the second half. At one point, Austin Spurs held a 25-point lead over the Vipers. The RGV Vipers struggled to find the offensive rhythm that they displayed throughout the season.
The loss ends the Vipers’ participation in the 2017-18 NBA G League season. The Vipers finished the regular season with a 29-21 record and as the fourth seed of the Western Conference. The Vipers defeated the Texas Legends at home in the first round before tonight’s loss against first seed Austin Spurs.
