Mary Avila

Mary is proud to be from the Rio Grande Valley, having been born and raised in Brownsville.

She began her career at KGBT-TV back in 2008 after graduating from the University of Texas at Brownsville with a bachelor's degree in mass media communication.

Mary began as a reporter and quickly ascended to anchoring the weekend newscast.

During that time, she covered then-candidate Barack Obama’s visit to the Valley in 2008. She also exposed the fraudulent practices of Obra and Casa Linda Homes in the RGV, uncovered a tiger selling ring outside a Walmart and even helped catch a fugitive in Pharr, literally!

In 2011, after anchoring and reporting for three years, she started anchoring the morning newscast, where she got the opportunity to do fun and interactive segments on community events, cooking, fashion, music and politics. Some of her favorite moments included interviewing Louise Harrison, the sister of Beatles member George Harrison, along with Chris Perez, Tejano singer Selena’s widowed husband.

She was voted best reporter two years in a row in the Brownsville Reader’s Choice Awards, an honor that’s truly humbling for her since it came from her hometown!

After dedicating seven years to her passion, she decided to take a break to raise her son. And now two years later, she’s back as our Daytime @ 9 host, where she gets to deliver animated interviews and promote businesses all across the RGV.
