Alfredo Vela, or Freddy as his friends and family know him, is the Weekend Weather Anchor and a Reporter with CBS 4. He grew up in the small town of Olmito, just outside of Brownsville and is proud to have called the Rio Grande Valley his home for most of his life.
He graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 2003, and that’s where his love of Theater, Television, and Radio began. Freddy used his passion and channeled it into the stage at the Camille Playhouse, a community theater in Brownsville. He trained with the late Ben Agresti for several years before moving to Edinburg to continue his education at The University of Texas Pan American.
At UTPA, Freddy turned his acting and speech skills into action by working with the Radio and News department at the University. He, along with ten other students and their Supervisor, Mr. Fred Mann, teamed up to present and create what is now known as Bronc Radio, a college radio station for students, by students. It was through this program, Freddy entered and won two awards through the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, including a first place finish for TV Advertising and third in Radio Interviewing.
After working with Gamestop TV, Freddy made his way to KFXV Fox 2 News. Veteran News Anchor Marianela Aguierre realized Freddy had a keen eye for weather and hired him as a Weather Anchor for Fox 2. He eventually worked his way to Lead Weather Anchor for the station, a producer for Good Day Valley, and then Lead Host of the program. He also was the Lead Weather Anchor for KXOF Fox News in Laredo, TX.
Freddy is proud to now be with CBS 4 where he is working on receiving his Meteorology Certification and reporting on stories that matter to the community.
Freddy also enjoys his time off, where he teaches spin classes three times a week, travels across Texas when possible, and is an avid video game player. He is the proud father of a very chubby cat named George, and a white husky named Ghost.
