10-year-old Rio Grande City boy killed in crash in Refugio County
A 10-year-old Rio Grande City boy is dead and three others are in the hospital following a crash in Refugio County on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 77, about two miles north of Woodsboro in Refugio County.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said a preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Ford F-350 was traveling north on U.S. Highway 77 in the right lane when the vehicle’s rear right wheel assembly came off.
According to the report, the driver of the vehicle lost control, crossing both northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 77, overturned into the center median and onto the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 77.
Troopers said that two passengers in the vehicle were ejected and were not wearing seatbelts.
One of the passengers, Jonathan Gonzalez-Pena, 10, from Rio Grande City was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Three passengers in the vehicle were transported by helicopter to a Corpus Christi hospital. The driver was also taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The crash remains under investigation.
