Authorities identify victims killed in overnight fire in Hidalgo County
Three people were killed and four others are in the hospital following an early morning fire in Hidalgo County.
We're told the fire was located north of 9 Mile Line on Bentsen Palm Road.
John Franz, Public Information Officer for the Hidalgo County Fire Marshal's Office said, Maria Isabel Maldonado, 37, her son, 5-year-old Gustavo Maldonado, and family friend, 15-year-old Jonathan Palomarez were killed in the fire.
Four others were taken to the hospital. Their names have not been released.
Officials said that they are looking at fire patterns and what witnesses said.
Authorities stated that the fire started in the living room and the home didn't have smoke detectors. They added that it took firefighters a while to put out the fire because of the way the home is built.
Franz said if it wasn't for the bravery of one of the deputies, another child may have died in the fire.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
