A judge sentenced a 33-year-old Garciasville resident to 48 months in prison on Wednesday, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office Southern District of Texas.

Prosecutors say Jorge Barrera, 33, of Garciasville pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking in November 2017.

An investigation began on Aug. 16, 2017, when authorities discovered more than seven kilograms of cocaine inside a Chevrolet Impala at the Veterans Port of Entry in Brownsville.

After authorities "conducted a controlled ddelivery of the vehicle at the La Plaza Mall in Mcallen," sureveillance agents spotted Barrera park next to the "cocaine-loaded vehicle."

Prosecutors say Barrera got into the vehicle and attempted to drive away, but federal agents surrounded him and took him into custody.

Barrera will remain in custody until a transfer to an undetermined U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
