All-inclusive park opens in Cameron Park
Just in time for summer, a new playground opened at La Esperanza Park in Cameron Park.
The half-a-million-dollar all-inclusive playground is the first of its kind within the Cameron County parks system and in the city of Brownsville.
The playground has sensory-wheel chair equipment, which was funded by grants and monetary donations from local agencies and organizations.
On Thursday, Cameron County officials opened up the playground that welcomes all children, including those with special needs— something Norma Aguero and her son have been looking forward to.
“I know he’s going to feel like he’s welcomed,” Aguero said. “We’re not going to feel like the looks and the stares that he gets because he’s different.”
Aguero explains that her 6-year-old son Alejandro has Moebius Syndrome, which affects his facial expressions and eye sight. But this playground makes him feel just like a regular kid.
“It’s awesome. It’s awesome we’re going to be taking advantage of this park,” said Aguero.
Having family members of his own, Cameron County Precinct 2 Commissioner Alex Dominguez says the park was necessary so all children can have a place to play.
“This kind of playground is meant for them, so that they can enjoy themselves and not get to sit on their sidelines —watch their brothers and sisters playing," Dominguez said. "Now they can be full participants in the playground.”
