All-inclusive playground coming to Brownsville
The city of Brownsville will soon have a playground specifically designed for children with special needs at La Esperanza Park.
This week, the county received a donation of $20,000 for the playground from four Lions Clubs in Brownsville, specifically the Brownsville Downtown Lions Club, the Brownsville Border Lions Club, the Brownsville Nite Lions Club and the West Brownsville Lions Club.
The playground will have sensory and wheelchair friendly equipment. County officials say the playground is much needed in the community.
"We identified at least 5,000 students in the Brownsville Independent School District that would qualify as one of these special needs students," said Cameron County Precinct 2 Commissioner Alex Dominguez. "So, 5,000 students in a city of 180,000 shows us that there is a need for them to come and be able to play, rather than just being on the sideline and watching their friends enjoy the playground. This way, they can be involved with their family and friends, as well."
The playground is expected to be completed in April.
