Alton applies for grant to expand city park
Alton wants add soccer fields to Josefa Garcia Memorial Park.
The city recently applied for a $500,000 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant to add soccer fields and other amenities to Josefa Garcia Memorial Park.
"What we did before we went forward with the grant application was we actually had a master parks plan done," said Assistant City Manager Jeff Underwood. "And part of that master parks plan was a survey of our residents to find out what they need — and more parks, more amenities for those parks was one of the major issues that came up for us."
Josefa Garcia Memorial Park currently covers 5 acres. With the grant money, Alton plans to add 50 acres.
The expansion would include soccer fields and multi-purpose sports fields.
