UPDATE: U.S. Customs and Border Protection has released an update following a deadly rollover crash that occurred on Monday in Mercedes.

We're told the driver of the vehicle was a United States citizen.

The driver, along with 13 passengers in the vehicle, were taken to local hospitals with injuries.

CBP said in a press release that the 13 passengers in the vehicle were determined to be illegally present in the United States and were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. They ranged from 16 to 42 years of age.

The driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.

“Such senseless tragedies bring a bleak reminder of just how careless these smugglers are toward the people that trust them with their lives,” said Chief Patrol Agent Manuel Padilla, Jr. in a press release. “The price of coming to United States should never be your life.”

The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and PFC Pedro Martinez Road.

Authorities said that one person has been airlifted and 13 others were taken to the hospital by ground with various injuries.
