Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican sex offender Thursday near Mission.

Agents arrested Alberto Castelan-Gonzalez, 56, a Mexican citizen who lived in Pharr, according to federal court records.

"Record checks revealed the Defendant was formally Deported/Excluded from the United States on June 22, 2017, through Laredo, Texas," according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

Gonzalez is a low-risk sex offender registered with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child on July 13, 1999, according to the criminal complaint. The Department of Public Safety sex offender registry lists the victim as a 6-year-old boy.

Castelan is now charged with illegal re-entry.
