A judge on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old Brownsville man to 11 years in federal prison for methamphetamine trafficking, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office Southern District of Texas.

Prosecutors say Ernesto Alsonso Valdez, 21, of Brownsville attempted to smuggle 4.28 kilograms of methemphetamine at the Gateway International Bridge on Nov. 24, 2016.

Officers found the meth concealed within the back seats and rear bumper of Valdez's vehicle. They also found a small amount of narcotics inside his shoe during a personal search, according to the news release.

Following his release from prison, Valdez will be on supervised release for five years. Valdez pleaded guilty on Aug. 31, 2017.
