City of Mission elects new mayor
Residents elected a new mayor Saturday night in the Mission mayoral runoff election.
In a major upset, Precinct 4 Councilman Armando “Doc” O’caña beat out longtime mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas, effectively ending his 20-year streak in the city’s highest seat.
Unofficial final results show O’Caña received 51 percent of the vote, while Salinas received 49 percent of the vote.
A run-off election was needed after Salinas says he was two votes shy of attaining the 50 percent majority needed to be re-elected on May 5.
Voters also elected Gus Martinez to replace O’Caña as Precinct 4 commissioner Saturday night.
Unofficial results show Martinez received 52 percent of the vote, while challenger Julian J. Gonzalez received 48 percent of the vote.
