Communities unite for mother and daughter killed by suspected drunk driver
Two communities are grieving after a mother and daughter are killed in an accident allegedly caused by a drunk driver.
According to DPS, 75-year-old Elena Lopez Cantu and 45-year-old Maria Zulema Garcia were passengers in a Ford Crown Victoria traveling west on Highway 83 when they were struck and killed by a car driven by 30-year-old Lissette Fuentes near San Julian Road on June 12.
Investigators believe Fuentes was drunk when she drove across the median and struck the car.
The women were being driven by Garcia's husband who is now hospitalized and is in serious condition.
The family is well known in the Roma and Escobares area and are active in church. To honor their fellow brother, members of ACTS and the Knights of Columbus, held a bucket drive in Roma to help raise money for medical bills and funeral expenses.
They hope more people will realize the seriousness of drinking and driving.
"Look what happened. We lost two people, innocent people, that's even harder. So please guys, don't drink and drive. If you're gonna drink, please don't drive," said Ricardo De La Cruz.
