Donna students welcome classmate home from Houston
Students at Guzman Elementary School welcomed a classmate home from Houston on Monday.
"It touched my heart just to see how the school, the staff, everybody just welcomed the boys," said Janie Alvarez.
Alvarez took her 4-year-old son, Abraham, to Houston for surgery. Complications from the first surgery forced Abraham to undergo a second operation.
While Abraham underwent the first and second surgery, the remnants of Hurricane Harvey flooded Houston — and Alvarez received an expected surprise. She delivered Abraham's new brother, who arrived two months early.
Stuck in Houston for much longer than expected, the family suffered financial hardships and couldn't return to Donna for the first day of school.
Students and staff at Guzman Elementary collected $600 to help the family.
"It's going to help us catch up to what we were," Alvarez said. "We had to pull out our money from our home here to be able to survive up there."
