A drug smuggler crashed a vehicle into the Rio Grande on Wednesday, leaving behind nearly 600 pounds of marijuana.

Rio Grande City Border Patrol agents responded to the smuggling attempt near La Rosita after witnessing several subjects loading large bundles inside a Cadillac Escalade, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Agents say minutes later, the vehicle was seen speeding away from the Rio Grande, but quickly turned around as agents responded.

The driver ultimately drove the Escalade into the river and was seen swimming across to Mexico.

Inside the Escalade, agents found 47 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $460,000.

Special agents with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force seized the marijuana and vehicle.
