Edinburg woman, 22, accused of smuggling Honduran immigrant in backseat of car
A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper this week arrested an Edinburg woman accused of human smuggling.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS 4 News, on Wednesday, the trooper conducted a traffic stop on a white 2012 Chevrolet Cruze for a non-functioning break lamp in Hidalgo County.
Upon making contact with the driver, identified as 22-year-old Cristina Ortiz of Edinburg, the trooper noticed a man “laying flat on the rear seat to hide from law enforcement,” according to the criminal complaint.
The man, identified as a Honduran immigrant, told the trooper he had illegally entered into the U.S.
Based on the information provided, the trooper then arrested Ortiz for unlawful transportation of person for pecuniary benefit.
Bond was set at $15,000.
Ortiz remains in Hidalgo County jail, and couldn’t be reached for comment.
