Experts: Illegal tire dumping poses environmental and health hazards
The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council coordinated a "Road to Recycling" campaign Saturday to encourage the proper disposal of old tires.
Approximately 2 million tires abandoned throughout the Rio Grande Valley pose both environmental and health threats, said Executive Director Ron Garza.
Old tires collect water, providing breeding ground for mosquitoes; clog drainage ditches, which causes flooding; and release dangerous chemicals when they catch fire, posing a danger to first responders.
Exposure to burning fires may cause both short-term and long-term health problems, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
