Firefighter dies while fighting west Texas wildfire
A firefighter from the Weatherford Fire Department died Sunday while battling a wildfire in west Texas.
Richard "Andy" Loller Jr., 42, suffered an unspecified medical emergency and died on a medical plane on the way to an Odessa hospital, according to the City of Weatherford.
“We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Andy’s passing,” said City Manager Sharon Hayes. “He will be sorely missed by the community and all who knew and worked with him. Our prayers are with his family at this time.”
Loller was part of the crew battling the Scenic Loop Complex fire in the Davis Mountains.
The complex includes seven fires that have burned more than 24,000 acres, according to Texas A&M Forest Service. As of Sunday morning, it was 65-percent contained.
Fires broke out June 3 after lightning strikes in the area, according to the Fort Davis Fire Department.
Loller is survived by his wife, two children and sister.
“His cheer, jokes and laughs will be missed by all,” the department said in a social media post.
