Nearly 9 tons of marijuana seized in 48 hours

U.S. Border Patrol seize marijuana

U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley sector have seized $14.3 million worth of marijuana in just two days.

One large bust happened during an immigration inspection at the Falfurrias checkpoint.

There, more than 10,300 pounds of marijuana was found inside a tractor-trailer.

In Rio Grande City, 1,500 pounds of marijuana was found inside a pickup truck.

After noticing Border Patrol agents and a helicopter the driver of the truck made a u-turn.

The driver then fled into the river, abandoning the truck filled with marijuana.

Additional seizures brought the total amount of marijuana seized on Wednesday and Thursday to nearly 19,000 pounds, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. Border Patrol agents have seized more than 700,000 pounds of marijuana so far this year.
