Harlingen company ships Valley grapefruit to customers nationwide for the holidays
A Harlingen company will ship more than 600,000 boxes of Rio Grande Valley fruit and nuts during December.
Pittman and Davis sends local grapefruit, other fruit and nuts to customers nationwide.
"We have a lot of product,” said company supervisor Leonardo De Leon. “And it's growing and we are packing a lot of new trucks every day."
On any given day in December, 18,000 boxes will be shipped to major U.S. cities.
The company — which has been open since 1926 — hires about 450 seasonal workers for the holidays. They come from the Valley and Mexico.
"It's important to work during these holiday, especially to pay off the holiday gifts,” said Edinburg resident Rosalinda Costilla.
Costilla works the holiday season at Pittman and Davis, and in Michigan during the remainder of the year.
About 1.5 million locally sourced grapefruits will pass through the warehouse each year.
According to the US. Department of Agriculture, Texas is projected to export more boxes of grapefruit than Florida or California in 2017.
