Plans to build a $14 million convention center and hotel in Harlingen remain on track, said Mayor Chris Boswell.

Plans to build a $14 million convention center and hotel in Harlingen remain on track, said Mayor Chris Boswell.

The 43,700-square-foot convention center would be located near Sam's Club.

Funded by local sales tax, the convention center project may bring people to Harlingen for meetings and other events.

"You want to see more people come into Harlingen. You want to see more people utilize our community as a central location, then the convention center can do that," Boswell said.

Residents who spoke with CBS 4 News said they support the project.

"There's a lot of things they have in McAllen that we don't have here -- like the home shows and things like that." said Marilyn Parent of Harlingen. "That'd be great if they had them here."

A San Antonio-based developer will operate and maintain the convention center.
