Harlingen to get new, expanded hike and bike trail
Harlingen residents will soon have an expanded hike and bike trail along the Arroyo Colorado.
City commissioners approved the project Wednesday evening.
Harlingen Parks and Recreation Director Javier Méndez submitted the proposal. The $1.3 million trail is set to be in the same area as the current hike and bike trail at Arroyo Park off of E. New Hampshire St.
Most of the work, which consists of clearing brush for the trails, will be done by a group that completed the Monte Bella trail in Brownsville.
"They approached us to see if we would consider developing land that was donated to the city [and] develop it into a trail," Méndez said.
The city says volunteers with a biking group are also willing to help get that job done. The city will help with labor and equipment.
Not only would this trail benefit bikers, but it would also give runners and walkers new areas to explore.
