News Release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office
Sheriff’s Investigators have arrested four suspects in connection with the deaths of 23 year old Juan Gerardo Casares, and 49 year old Jose de Jesus Cano
On Saturday March 25, 2017 at approximately 3:54 a.m., Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home at the 600 block of Martinez Street in Progreso, Hidalgo County, Texas, to assist the Progreso Police Department with a report of shots fired and a man down.
When the Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at the scene to assist Progreso PD, they observed a deceased male, later identified as 23 year old Juan Gerardo Casares, lying on the street in front of the residence with several apparent gunshot wounds. At the request of Progreso Police Department, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation. The Major Crimes Unit, along with Crime Scene Specialists, responded to the scene to process the crime scene, gather evidence, and speak to witnesses.
Sheriff’s Investigators received information that a second deceased male, later identified as 49 year old Jose de Jesus Cano, was at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, with an apparent gunshot wound. A third victim, 28 year old Nelson Salazar, was also being treated at the hospital for a non-life threatening injury, resulting from a gunshot wound he received to the leg area.
Investigators learned that prior to the shooting, a white passenger car with three males, had arrived at the residence on Martinez St but then left. A few minutes later, the same vehicle returned to the residence, and a fourth male was with the original three males. The four males, later identified as Juan Gerardo Casares, Jordan Jovvany Garces, Eduardo Casares, and Fernando Casares, incited a physical fight with the persons outside the home, and then two individuals exchanged gunfire.
Juan Gerardo Casares allegedly shot Jose De Jesus Cano, causing him to die from his injuries. When 25 year old Eduardo Alejandro Cano, witnessed his father, Jose de Jesus Cano, being shot, Eduardo Cano then allegedly shot and killed Juan Gerardo Casares. Once Investigators gathered sufficient evidence, the four suspects were subsequently arrested and charged with Murder, a first degree felony.
Today, the following suspects: 22 year old Eduardo Casares, 20 year old Fernando Casares, 19 year old Jordan Jovvany Casares, and 25 year old Eduardo Alejandro Cano, were arrested and taken before a Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace where they were formally charged with Murder, a first degree felony, and each given a $500,000 cash surety bond. The suspects were then committed to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.
