Local police departments gather to honor fallen officers
Gone but never forgotten— that was the message during a ceremony in San Juan honoring officers who died in the line of duty.
San Juan police, along with other law enforcement agencies from Alamo, Donna and Donna ISD, came together to honor the men and woman in uniform are no longer here.
San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez says he decided to host the ceremony to remind the public that law enforcement in the Valley works to protect the community together.
On Wednesday, they paid tribute to Deputy Jose Garza Sr.
"Especially honor that San Juan deputy city marshal that we lost back in 1930 that was forgotten until about two years ago when the memorial committee of the Texas Police Officers Memorial started looking into it," Garza said. "They found that he was killed in the line of duty while investigating bootleggers."
After 88 years, Deputy City Marshal Garza was finally inducted into the Texas Peace's Officer's Memorial on May 6, 2018.
