A new device is helping kids in the Valley see more clearly.

Region One Education partnered with Sight Savers America to provide life-changing technology for 26 students with severe visual impairment.

The Onyx Electronic Video Magnifiers (EVMs) is a magnifying device that increases vision up to 118 times, allowing the students to better write, read and see their loved one's faces.

"This is the first of its kind in the Region One area,” said Educational Specialist Twinkle Morgan. “We did the lower Valley this year, we're hoping next year we'll do the Laredo, Zapata and Roma area."

The students were identified and referred to Sight Savers America's low-vision program after meeting eligibility requirements.

EVMs are more expensive than the average household can afford and are not accepted by all medical insurances.

Thanks to donations, the students were able to receive this life-changing technology all at no cost.

Sight Savers America will provide follow-up eye care for the students each year and will keep records of the students’ progress with the equipment until the student reaches the age of 19.
