Mercedes police searching for suspects accused of vandalizing livestock show grounds
Law enforcement in Mercedes are looking for multiple people who broke into the livestock show grounds.
Police Chief Olga Maldonado tells CBS 4 that several people destroyed property and stole valuable items on Sunday.
"It's very disappointing that individuals walked in there and did criminal mischief," Maldonado said.
Livestock show general manager D.J. Wernecke says multiple people vandalized the rodeo arena and several structures both outside and inside.
According to Wernecke, the vandals caused more than $40,000 worth of damage and stole a couple of items deemed valuable to the livestock show.
"When we have something like this, it just hurts us because it's more money that were are taking away from the kids. The facility is owned by the public," Wernecke said.
Currently, there is an alarm system in place, but Wernecke says they will revamp security and add more cameras.
There is a reward up to $5,000 for those who provide enough information leading to an arrest and a conviction.
At this time, Chief Maldonado says they have zero leads as to who did this.
They are asking the community to come forward and assistance with information.
Anyone with information on the suspects or incident is asked to call Mercedes Crime Stoppers at 956-565-3102
