Border Patrol agents in Hidalgo County arrested two suspected drug smugglers and seized nearly 1,000 pounds of marijuana in two separate drug smuggling attempts on Wednesday.
McAllen agents say Wednesday morning they observed a Chevrolet Silverado parked in a rural area near the Rio Grande near Peñitas. When agents responded, the driver turned the vehicle around and sped towards the Rio Grande, abandoning the pickup and fleeing to Mexico.
Inside the vehicle, agents found 67 bundles of marijuana weighing nearly 800 pounds. The drugs are estimated to be worth $634,000.
Hours later near Sullivan City, agents observed four people who had illegally entered the United States carrying three bundles of marijuana. Authorities responded and found the three bundles, arresting two undocumented immigrants in the process.
The bundles weighed more than 170 pounds and have an estimated value of $136,000.
Both marijuana seizures were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
