Officer-involved shooting victim identified
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday identified the victim of an officer-involved shooting in Progreso.
Forty-six-year-old Evelio Gomez, a Mexican national, died Sunday after he was reportedly shot by a Progreso police officer.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation at the request of the Progreso Police Department, as CBS 4 News previously reported:
A Progreso police officer fatally shot a machete-wielding man Sunday night, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office.
At about 9:24 p.m., Sheriff's deputies responded to a home on Encino Drive at the request of the Progreso Police Department.
Upon arrival, deputies say they they found a man dead with a gunshot wound.
Investigators spoke to witnesses, who said a Progreso police officer responded to the area after reports of a man wielding a machete.
According to the news release:
"The officer made contact with the male subject and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the officer discharged his weapon fatally shooting the male. The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries."
An investigation into the escalation of use of force continues.
The man's identity will be released pending notification of next of kin.
