Pharr man wanted on kidnapping warrant arrested at Laredo bridge

Officers at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge in Laredo on Friday arrested a 21-year-old Pharr man wanted on an outstanding federal kidnapping warrant.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, U.S. Marshals and FBI special agents apprehended Luis Gerardo Betancourt, 21, of Pharr mid-bridge, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A fingerprint check at secondary confirmed Betancourt's identity, who was wanted on an outstanding federal kidnapping warrant issued by FBI San Antonio and a failure to appear for jury trial warrant issued by the U.S. District Court Southern District of Texas.

According to the news release:

Betancourt had been sentenced in absentia to life in prison in connection with the kidnapping, hostage-taking conspiracy case.

Betancourt remains in U.S. Marshals custody, according to the news release.
