Police: 1-year-old girl left unattended for nearly 15 minutes at HEB in Palmview
Police continue to investigate why a baby was left unattended inside a shopping cart for nearly 15 minutes at a HEB in Palmview on Sunday.
"Who would they leave their baby, you know, just there at HEB,” said 22-year-old Mariana Sierra, who captured the incident on her cell phone.
Palmview Police Department captain Saul Uvalle says a 1-year-old girl was alone for about 15 minutes in the produce section of HEB before police were able to locate her parents.
"The parents did specify that one was going to the restroom and would be right back--left the child in the custody of the other parent,” Uvalle said. “The other parent thought that the spouse had walked away with the child, and he walked away from the area--leaving the child behind.”
Uvalle says his department is currently interviewing witnesses and watching surveillance video from the store to determine if charges will be filed.
"We do investigate,” said Uvalle. “We staff it with the district attorney's office and we get their recommendation, then we have to forward these types of cases to Child Protective Services. They will be notified for them to open up a case.”
Due to the pending investigation, the identities of the parents are not being released at this time.
Uvalle urges parents to pay more attention to their kids and communicate with each other at all times when in public places.
